Back in May Facebook introduced a ban on violent videos, after suggestions that they might cause psychological damage. But the social network has now reversed that decision, and violent videos are allowed once more.

Facebook argues that it has ‘long been a place where people turn to share their experiences, particularly when they’re connected to controversial events on the ground, such as human rights abuses, acts of terrorism and other violent events.’ Facebook doesn’t ‘allow photos or videos that glorify violence’ according to its warnings policy. When users are sharing violent content to condemn it, Facebook says that is acceptable.

Facebook’s attitude to censorship is still mixed. Photos or videos of ‘nudity, drug use or other graphic content’ are not allowed under any circumstances. But where violence concerned, there is more balance. The Facebook community standards page states:

People use Facebook to share events through photos and videos. We understand that graphic imagery is a regular component of current events, but must balance the needs of a diverse community. Sharing any graphic content for sadistic pleasure is prohibited.

Users can report any content they find offensive. If Facebook finds that the content meets its community standards, it is up to the individual concerned to hide posts so they can’t see them, or choose not to see updates from certain people.
