Facebook is discontinuing its @facebook.com email service. The social network started sending out notices to its users of the service’s impending shutdown. “We’re making this change because most people haven’t been using their Facebook email address, and we can focus on improving our mobile messaging experience for everyone,” said a Facebook representative speaking to Softonic.

Users who opted to list a primary email address in their Facebook profile will be able to forward their @facebook.com email to their primary email. This feature can be disabled if users do not want Facebook to forward any emails. While email addresses can be kept private, it’s not hard to guess a user’s @facebook.com email address by looking at their profile URL and adding the user ID or name before @facebook.com. This means strangers can easily contact you via @facebook.com’s forwarding feature.

Facebook’s email service was meant to be a private alternative for traditional email but it never took off. From the start, Facebook’s email lacked important things like subject lines or carbon copies. Although the service has been around for over three years, development has been stagnant so it’s not surprising to see Facebook discontinuing the service.
