A new privacy tool from Facebook called Privacy Checkup aims to help you understand who you’re sharing to. Facebook experimented with the feature back in May but now it’s ready for prime time.

To check if you have the new Privacy Checkup feature, head over to Facebook and look for the lock icon at the top, next to the Notifications button. You’ll see a cute blue dinosaur if you have the feature.

Privacy Checkup will walk you through your default sharing settings as well as walk you through every app that has access to your Facebook account. I found a lot of old applications I’m no longer using so I removed them. For the apps you want to keep, you can choose which friends to share with or you can share only to yourself.

This is a great tool to understand the basics of privacy settings, which Facebook hasn’t made the most obvious in the past. Facebook has a reputation of being creepy but Privacy Checkup is a good step toward getting users to understand how their sharing settings work.
