The internet is absolutely loving the Dalle-2 and Dalle-Mini AI image generation tools at the moment. Social networks are alight with weird and wonderful creations that people have been prompting the tools to create. The tools are in that perfect sweet spot for meme-ability as they are easy to use and still not perfect tech, meaning the results end up being weird and whacky while also strangely enchanting. Well, Meta has been working on its own AI imaging tool and it has a unique twist. Let’s take a look.
Meta’s Make-A-Scene tool is still not publicly available, but the company has decided to show it off. It looks like, with its tool, Meta is focusing on more artistic output as it gives the user more of an opportunity to give prompts and guide the AI. Another key aspect is the canvas, with Make-A-Scene able to generate images that are 2,048 pixels by 2,048 in size.
Another key and unique aspect of Make-A-Scene is that users are able to include their own sketches alongside text prompts. These sketches don’t need to be good or even have too much detail, they just give the tool a better understanding of what the scene should look like before it gets to work.
Meta performed a lot of testing on this to make sure that the method they chose would better represent the artist’s intent. In the blog post announcing the move, Meta said:
“We validated this premise using human evaluators. Each was shown two images generated by Make-A-Scene: one generated from only a text prompt, and one from both a sketch and a text prompt. […] We found that the image generated from both text and sketch was almost always (99.54 percent of the time) rated as better aligned with the original sketch.”
For Meta, this clearly demonstrated that including a sketch gave the tool a much better sense of what the image was supposed to look like, therefore removing a lot of the ambiguity that has led to so many meme-worthy efforts from similar tools.
For now, however, we can’t get our hands on Make-A-Scene and will just have to wait until we can. In other Meta AI news though, the company has recently launched an impressive translation tool and is looking to partner with Wikipedia to help prevent the spread of misinformation.
